A search using the same flight info in Flightradar24 reveals that no flights under this acronym have actually crossed Iran since Friday. In fact, this flight number corresponds to the Turkish airline company called MNG Airlines. And if you take a look at the aviation data from this aircraft from June 15 to 16, you can see that this flight that went from Ankara to Athens, never even flew through Iran, only in the north of Iran and Turkmenabat or Turkmenistan.
So what actually happened here? The map that was used on the viral claims actually is what adds to the confusion, particularly because it does not show a borderline. So a screenshot that is misleading since it's extremely zoomed in, and we can't see where the plane is even flying through.
And then the origin of the videos, Eileen, is also highly suspicious. Our editorial team actually never found any type of trace of this alleged media called the Prime Scope online. The information shared in this post is completely fake.
What about those Luxembourg cargo planes mentioned in the other viral claims, Catalina?
Indeed Shaon, we found… that… these examples of these Luxembourg cargo planes departing from China that users claim landed in Iran, and in reality we found these visuals don't actually show real flight trajectories but only trajectory estimates, according to Flightradar24.
Our team contacted Flightradar24 who explained to us that these plane icons that we see highlighted in red that appear to be flying over Iran like this one are, in fact, only estimated data, which does not actually correspond to the path actually taken by the plane.
Flightradar also explained this on their Facebook page on Sunday following these claims, saying that these estimations occur when aircraft fly out of the radar's coverage area, in which (case) the radar will automatically estimate a position that they say could be inaccurate, as it was in this case.
The concerned company, Luxembourg-based Cargolux, also reached out to their users online, mentioning the fake claim, saying that Cargolux would like to categorically state that none of its flights actually utilized Iranian airspace (as) per the fake claims, claims that they say are completely unfounded.
