The world remains far from the goal of "adequate housing for all." In this exclusive with Leaders Talk, UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach tells CGTN host Wang Guan that over 2.8 billion people currently live in inadequate housing worldwide, including more than 1.1 billion in slums or informal settlements, and over 300 million who are completely homeless. In Africa, 62% of urban housing is informal; in the Asia-Pacific region, more than 500 million lack access to basic water services, while over 1 billion people remain without adequate sanitation.
As global efforts to promote sustainable urban development intensify, Shanghai's "15-minute life circle" model is drawing international attention. Rossbach shares how Shanghai's proximity and community-based life circle and riverside revitalization projects not only repurpose existing resources and enhance residents' quality of life, but also offer replicable lessons for sustainable cities worldwide. She calls for these practices to be promoted on more international platforms.
Rossbach highlights China's success in lifting 800 million people out of poverty, providing critical lessons for Africa, Latin America, and impoverished Asian regions. She emphasizes that cities are central to poverty alleviation, requiring integrated access to housing, education, and healthcare. Urbanization, she notes, goes beyond development, focusing on creating harmonious spaces that blend services, culture, ecology, and economic growth.
